The Mafia: Chapter Four

*This rough draft is entirely a work of fictional writing*

Jane is sitting at a table inside a Michelin star Greek restaurant, waiting for her dinner date with Avi – she is wearing a tight orange dress that promotes the promiscuity of her assets. After about ten minutes, Avi walks into the restaurant, kisses Jane on the lips and then takes a seat, “Hey, sorry that I’m a little late – traffic was insane.”

Jane leans back in her chair while slowly tapping her finger on the table, “Well, well, well, look who decided to show up.”

Avi leans in across the table and whispers, “Jane, are you a psycho or something?”

Jane continues to tap her finger on the table, “No why?”

Avi continues to whisper, “You texted me fifteen times today, telling me not to show up and then when I show up you give me attitude?”

Jane leans in across the table, “Are you psycho or something?”

Avi smiles, “Maybe, why?”

Jane speaks with seduction, “Why would you show when I told you not to?”

Avi sits upright in his chair and takes a sip of water, “Jane… I know you like excitement, but you don’t have to be such a temperamental drama queen all of the time.”

Jane responds, “You show up wearing sweatpants, Timberland boots and a waffle sweater? Geez, thanks for putting in some effort.”

Before Avi can respond, the waitress walks over, who happens to be a stunningly beautiful girl in her mid-twenties, “Hi, thanks for choosing to dine with us this evening, can I get you started with some drinks?”

Avi looks the waitress in the eyes, “What type of red wine do you recommend? Something sweet, but not too sweet.”

The waitress places a hand on her right hip, “Good question. I would suggest our house red wine, it is made here from the grapes that we grow ourselves.”

Avi lowers his voice, “Does it taste any good?”

The waitress looks at Jane then looks at Avi, “Yes. It not too sweet, not too dry.”

Avi raises his index finger, “Perfect. We’ll take a bottle of that please.”

Jane gives Avi a disgusted look, “Really?”

Avi responds, “Really what? What did I do now?”

Jane continues to mean mug, “You’re just going to cheat on me like that? Right in front of me like that?”

Avi closes his eyes to try and keep his composure, “I’m not sure what you’re getting at, but how was that cheating? Why is it that anytime that I talk to any girl, you say that I’m cheating?”

Jane rolls her eyes, “Oh don’t play dumb Avi. You know, that I know, that you know what you’re doing when you talk to women – you have a certain voice.”

Avi continues to maintain composure, “Listen, you look supremely beautiful tonight, how about we just focus on having a good time together?”

Jane sighs, “Fine.”

Before the conversation can continue any further, Avi feels a hand on his right shoulder, “Avi! My Godson, how are you?”

Avi turns around, “Isabella! Wow, how are you? It’s been awhile. Please take a seat.”

Isabella kisses Avi on his forehead then takes a seat. She tries to avoid eye contact with Jane and reluctantly says, “Hi Jane. How are you doing?”

Jane reluctantly responds, “Hi Isabella, long time no see. I’m doing great, thanks for asking. What a delight to run into you during my date with Avi.”

Isabella looks at Avi and speaks earnestly, “Avi, I wanted to thank you for paying for my college and for helping me through those medical issues that I was having. I cannot express enough gratitude.”

Avi gently places his hand over Isabella’s hand, “No need to ever thank me, you know that we live life as a family. What degree did you end up going for?”

Isabella responds, “Accounting.”

Avi boldly smiles, “Wow, this serendipitous rendezvous couldn’t have come at a more perfect time – we’re actually looking for another accountant to oversee a new business venture of ours. The job is yours if you want it.”

Jane intervenes, “Lilly said that she already found some solid candidates.”

Avi responds, “Nonsense. I’ve already made my decision. I trust Isabella like I would trust my own mother.”

Isabella can feel a tension building up and looks down at the table while speaking, “I’d love to take the job, but I just graduated and don’t really have a place to stay, I’ve been staying with different friends for the past few weeks…”

Avi briefly ponders, “Speak no more. Pack your shit and move into our house. You can stay as long as you need to. Do you still paint?”

Isabella laughs through the tension, but continues to look down at the table, “Thank you, really. I’m excited to be working with the family. Unfortunately, I don’t make art as often as I used to. I’ve been too busy with school.”

Avi replies, “That doesn’t make me feel very good. You are an fantastic artist and creative. We need some murals painted on some floors, walls and ceilings in the house if you’d like to work on them in your spare time…”

Isabella beamingly smiles, “I’d love that.

Jane prods the conversation, “What made you get the family tattoo along the side of your neck? That’s interesting placement…”

Isabella continues to avoid eye contact with Jane, “Because the head can’t move without the neck.”

Avi quietly laughs, “What a beautiful anecdote.”

Jane, without hesitation, takes out her phone and impatiently texts Avi, “Um, can I speak to you in private for a second please?’

Papa G, a notorious enemy to the family is meeting with the hooded man that attempted to attack Mary and D, “Sly, what the fuck happened to you? You look like shit.”

Sly has his arm in a sling and an icepack bandaged around the right temple of his head, “Tell me about it, I feel even worse.”

Papa G looks confused, “Well did you at least deliver the message?”

Sly nods his head, “Yes I did, except Mary wasn’t with Jay, she was with D – it looked like they were on some sort of romantic date.”

Papa G continues to look confused, “What a strange family they have…hopefully they got the message.”

Sly angrily responds, “He broke my fuckin’ collarbone and gave me a concussion!”

Papa G replies, “Did he hit you with something?”

Sly appears ashamed, “Yeah… his middle finger.”

Papa G isn’t buying it, “He beat you up only using his middle finger? Is that what you’re telling me?”

Sly replies, “I don’t know what the hell happened man, he moved so fast… I’ve never seen a human move that fast. He’s a fuckin’ ninja man! He was moving so fast it looked like he had eight arms.”

Papa G pounds his fist on the table in frustration, “God damn it! We have to show them that we are not afraid of their hocus pocus magic ninjitsu skills! You should have killed them right there!”

Sly looks up at the ceiling, “I didn’t even have time to react. I don’t know man. I don’t know what happened. I’m telling you – they are built different.”

Papa G calms himself, “Perhaps I should try playing some stealth politics. Send the mailman to their house and request a sit down between me and Avi.”

Sly stands up, “Okay. They call him The Godson though.”
